Mass Effect had a tight, well-paced story that didn't try to go beyond its means. It had a decent hero, interesting characters, and a truly despicable villian. It was a solid yet run-of-the-mill story that was well-executed.
I also enjoyed BioShock a lot. I just wanted to see Irrational go the extra mile with that story. Everything was in place to truly make that game epic and then they softballed it.
