Not so sure about that. In Japan, of course it'd do better on Playstation, but in the West, not so sure about that. Alot of western Sega fans switched to Xbox since Xbox was widely regarded as the spiritual successor to Dreamcast, and because the original Xbox got several Sega games. As for Shenmue itself being niche, I'm not really so sure of that either. It was the 4th bestselling Dreamcast game, seling to over 1 in 8 Dreamcast owners, not alot of series have achieved an attach rate like that. Also, the interest level for Shenmue has increased over the years, word of mouth from fervent Shenmue fans as well as Youtube playthroughs of Shenmue have made alot of people that have never played Shenmue interested in it. |
I'd agree last gen but I think there's more Sega fans on playstation this gen even in the west but this talk is speculation, I don't think there's a large portion of people still refusing to buy Playstation products.
The original Shenmue had some massive hype behind it, it was called the killer app on the Dreamcast and was touted as being it's savior. It sold well but it should have done more considering the hype and advertising IMO. There's still a pretty decent size of Shenmue fans out there, I still don't think it'll hit 1m unless it draws in a lot of new fans which is possible I guess.
I believe Shenmue fans deserve a 3rd game, how they left the game on a cliffhanger is criminal. I'm not sure if MS should be the one to have it exclusive though.
