Half life. This is still the archetype of what every FPS is nowadays. Scripts, In-Game cinematic, scenario and dialogues, 3D, multiplayer. And FPS are still big. You can find that in previous games (dark forces, etc.), but not in real 3D, and not with so much impact. I could agree also on Doom, which definitely had an immense impact. Wolfenstein was first, but it really feel like a draft, it's hard to relate with such primitive, repetitive and inartistic graphics.

Mario was very important, but it only remotely relate to current AAA. As for it to revive an entire industry, I strongly disagree. Nintendo made an excellent console at the right cost, and other excellent games, and in fact the market never really crashed in Japan, the arcade was still big, and even in Europe (and I presume there were in USA) we had a full range of computers that provided a fair amount of games in the 80's. If we have to take an old game, Pacman and space invaders would qualify better.
