I'm pretty sure they make a profit on every Wii U sold now, then they get the software money so they can make some money off it even if they don't do much. While if they were to spend money on advertising or price cuts and it doesn't really pay off they could end up with a loss. Best just to invest the money in the future, their next console has a much better chance of being hugely succesful than the Wii U does right now so that should take priority.


Everyone says this and they forget something inportant. For Nintendo, Hardware creation takes normally about 4 years. Early this year Nintendo said they had no plans of dropping the Wii U, AKA now replacment console in development for this generation. If they wanted to do one now, 2014+4=2018, and that would be 9th gen, so it makes no sense to not support a salvagable console for 4 years.

Also if they DID drop it, they would be doing what SEGA did with the: SMS, Sega CD, 32X, and Saturn, and that is one of the main causes to their demise.
