The same as Peter Jackson sacrificed part of the screen to save on film stock? The extra visible geometry mostly cancels out the gains from fewer pixels. Done correctly you render 35% more screen space (slightly zoomed out expanded to the sides) with 74% of the pixels. Unless you're the evil within and don't increase the fov while going widescreen :/
