Handhelds appear to be on a decline, though a new generation can totally change this, meaning that it's too early to call it a trend.
That said, if we take this to be a trend for the sake of projection, then an Xbox console could feasibly outsell a Nintendo handheld in a future generation (perhaps even the next one) if they don't fail their console twice in a row.
