Suikoden II had a unique system where you had got a certain percent experience bonus for every level you were below the enemy. The bonus really wasn't capped well though so instead of tappering off, it keeps growing with the level desparity. The result is that if you hold a character back without using it much to the point where it stays pretty low level and then toss it into a super high level battle, it can gain a ton of experience. Essentially you could go from level 30 to level 80 in one battle if you did it right. Slingshot leveling is the expression I've always heard used to describe it.
