The market is arguably smaller today given competition. It appears less hardware is going to be sold this gen.
If the Vita managed to sell 40 - 50 million I think people would consider that doing well. The 3DS is a top selling platform yet moving less units than its predecessor.
It seems like PS4 is the only platform that will move the same or more units this gen compared to last gen.

People should stop comparing this gen to last gen. PS2 wasn't bought by grannies for the most part or mums and dads or whatever. The PS2/Xbox/GC were mainly bought by core gamers. The Wii added about 60M sales that can be contributed to the motion control fad. I say fad and not evolution in gaming because MS utterly bombed with kinect this gen. It was fun for like 2 years and then everyone moved on.
You'd be better off comparing software sales and minus sales from "games" like the fitness and brain training ones. If you include them you might as well include all the PC/FB/iphone shovelware games and say the market has increased.

You should look at PS2 software sales. The PS2 was a beast at moving games geared at casual audiences. Something PS3 was much less successful with.
PS2, Wii, and Xbox 360 had pretty large casual audiences. That doesn't seem to be a significant audience this gen and I'm not sure that will change.

360 sold a it of casual but not too much more than the PS3. Either way most sales for both were for the hardcore. And good riddence to the casual crowd, forces our lot to make more games that the likes of me and you actually enjoy. LOL imagine the PS4 got the wii casual crowd. Sony would be wasting preciuos developer space make things like SOnyDOgs and Pii Fit or whatever. EWWWW.

Sony did say they want the Wii's crowd though. So you never know maybe those titles will come.
