There are a lot of people on the internet who let the internet decide their opinions for them. Part of that is this ridiculous "over hyped" thing, the other is Metacritic.
Personally, I don't give a rat's fuzzy, flea-ridden posterior about "hype" or some list that averages highly subjective review scores. Maybe it's because I'm from a generation where all we had to go by was box covers and word of mouth from friends. I'm really not sure, but the fact that so many other people are puppets to hype and Metacritic alternates between amusing and annoying.
Let's take Destiny, for example. A lot of people are complaining that it was "over hyped" and that's why they don't like it or they go on and on about how it's not good because it got a lower Meta-score. See, none of that crap ever moved me from the start. I knew exactly what kind of game it was even before the beta. People talking about how they were fooled by the hype, they were just fooled by THEMSELVES, they just want something to blame it on because they didn't do their homework. I think it looks pretty good but I didn't want to get sucked into another loot-grinding game after I got out of WoW, so I skipped it. I still might get it one day but it will be with my eyes totally open. I know what I would be getting into and I'm not going to whine because I thought it was something else.
As far as Metacritic goes, talking about that as if it were something meaningful (other than for sales) is a good way to lose my attention. It exists for the sake of sheep (though I do use Metacritic as a handy way to access the reviews themselves).
