If your buying the console for young kids then its an absolute no brainer. Buy a PS3. Like you said, the console in the UK is now £150 for the 12GB model but if you shop around, you can easily get a new one for a bit less.
Then you had the added bonus of literally 100s of older games for the system. Many of which can be picked up nowadays for a fiver if your willing to buy used from Ebay, CeX or Game etc. The PS4 will be worth buying them as an Xmas present, but maybe Xmas 2015/16 when there is a hell of lot more choice available (and the price will have come down)
