I'm hoping the implication here isn't that digital sales would been sizeable enough to turn the game from a flop into a success if retail sales were low.

I agree with you that it is a niche title, but it's certainly not being treated as such by Microsoft. Niche titles don't get major conference placement across multiple years, hardware bundles and TV advertising.
OT: I stopped following VGC pre-orders here a long time ago.
