Lower power isn't a bad thing. Wii U consumes less than the Wii. GTX980 consumes less than the 780 and it is substancially better.

 

Low power goals is one of the main reasons Wii U ended up underpowered.

I'd say the tablet was the main culprit. Nintendo was aiming for 300$ price point but the tablet cost 80$-100$ to manufacture.

If they choose a traditional controller for the next gen console they will be able to squeeze much more power in their hardware.

Also lower power = runs cooler/less noise/lower electricity bills/less chance to get RROD/YLOD type of problems.
