It's scary because people don't understand it and as such believe everything. Very cherry picked incidences of which none would result in a world like Watch Dogs.
Will not go into the details of these incidences a lot of which are caused by random failures and coincidences but let me tell you this.
Everything is hackable if you have a bit of knowledge, a lot of time a nd a good amount of luck. However you need to be a target. If you're not a target you won't get hacked, simple as that. The vast majority of people are not targets so they won't get hacked.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
