Their home console business is in more peril than the handheld business. Which is weird when all you hear is how handhelds are dead!

And that's saying something since the 3DS isn't doing all that great either! It's not doing bad, but it would appear is though the portable market has shrinked somewhat.

The only to actually lure MS and Sony fans is by giving them games that they like exclusively on the home console. That's the only way to do it. If not, we will see some 3rd parties bringing their games at launch and afterwards just to see people buying them on PS4 or XB1.
Gamers can move from one console to another, but you need to give them a really good reason to do it.

I whole heartedly agree; with the right kind of SW gamers of all kinds will come.

Sometimes i think Nintendo knows very well that their strategy of dumping their best games in the first 2 years on the market is not enough. It didn't work for GC and it didn't even work for Wii. The big exclusives always went to PS2/Xbox and PS3/Xbox 360, because Sony and MS created a business for them!

Have they really though? Couldn't they just as well blame the Wii U's failure on the controller? It seems as if Nintendo is very reluctant to learn any kind of lessons...

We are still a couple years, at least, from a new console by Nintendo.
Ideally, now, would be the best way to start building studios and new franchises. But there's still time.

I say they have 3 years until the Fusion has to launch; the 3DS is half way through it's life circle, and Wii U is fast approaching that mark as well. The problem is that it might be another 2 years until PS5 releases, and thus yet again leaving Nintendo in the dust powerwise. So, either make Fusion (prefertly with NEW Western Studios making games) or make a god damn powerhouse of a home console!

If Splatoon actually does well in the US and Europe we might see Nintendo greenlighting more of those projects instead of making them in western studios.
Personally, i'm hopeful that Nintendo's next financial briefing, which is in a couple of weeks, will reveal even more of their plans for the next generation. We might even be happy about some things.

I hope Splatoon takes of and that that initiates a time of new IP's for Nintendo; and hopefully not only Japanese ones bur Western as well.

When is their next briefing?

Without a doubt the handheld market has shrunk.
Before, parents could only contemplate a Nintendo portable for their kids, now they just lend their tablets or smartphones to play whatever game they have there and that's it.
That's why the Fusion strategy is vital to Nintendo: less spending on games and more revenue/profit with each game they release. So, even if they can't go back to GBA levels of HW sales, they can at least hope for a better financial state.

Wii U's tablet wasn't the reason for Wii U's situation. If anything, Nintendo tried to introduce a tablet with buttons and joyticks to an audience that was used to tablets and wasn't afraid anymore of those buttons, as a result of their experiment with the Wii remote and nunchuk.
It's just that everything else around it, failed.

I can't see 3DS lasting another 3/4 years.
3DS has, by year's end, been in the market for almost 4 years.
We already saw sales being flat last year despite a huge line-up. This year sales are going to fall a lot. And next year, if NEW 3DS hasn't another great line-up, it will fall even more.
Wii U won't last because it's sales are so low that when they start to go down (normal lifecycle) it won't be able to keep on sustaining the SW sales Nintendo needs.
Even if at GC levels in HW, Nintendo gets less profits for the same amount of games sold during GC's life. How do you justify big investments?
I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo announces the fusion strategy in 2016 to be released in the same year. By then, almost 6 years for 3DS and 4 for Wii U. And whatever titles they have for the Fusion consoles, they will release it on Wii U to keep fans happy.

I'm really curious about Splatoon.
It's SP mode might be the TPS Wii U also needs. And with a frantic MP mode it could really do wonders for Wii U and Nintendo's image in general.
NIntendo also has high hopes for the game. They said they want it to be another MK or Smash, i can't remember.

The next briefing is on 29th October.
