I think another problem outside of killer apps is multimedia features.
back in the mid-2000's before smart devices, PSP was pretty much the ultimate portable multimedia device. being able to play games+watch movies+listen to music+browse the web all on one device was a huge deal but now so many different devices are able to do all that and more.
When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.
