I bought my PS3 because I got a 1080p-capable TV set, so I felt obligated to have something which could generate a 1080p signal. At the time I got it (a month or so after release), there weren't any movies out on Blu-Ray that I wanted to see, and there were maybe three games I was interested in. For almost a year, the only Blu-Ray "movie" I had was Planet Earth. Then I got a Netflix account, and I watch Blu-Ray movies when they're available. It does bias my selection of movies somewhat, I tend to move Blu-Ray movies up in my queue. Alternating between Blu-Ray and DVD selections on Netflix really does make you notice the difference between them.
