I'm very familiar with redwood burl, and since it only grows in a 400 or so mile rang from southern oregon to the central coast of CA. I worked at a place selling many handmade redwood tables, bowls vases, etc for 6 years, also met many of the artist who work with it. Petrified wood has a very different look. As for the mazanita, several of the artits liked to use that as the base since it had the more interesting texture for the stand. While redwood burl, or the burl of other trees in general has a very nice look for the top.
