You never think in terms of "generations", that never made much sense in consumer electronics. The fact is the N3DS is a new "iteration" of hardware and there's nothing you can do to change that. Lumping the two consistently different platforms together to boast the results is disingenuous at best.
Your reasons for this being an excuse for people to not see the sales combined is half-baked since they have a valid point about exclusive software differentiating the the two platforms hence seperating them making sense ...
