I always find it funny when people say that true Islam is not like this (or any other monotheistic religion that claims to be universal for that matter). What Muhammed and his succesors did was just as brutal as IS, probably even more so because the scale was much larger.
Of course we need to put Muhammed in the right context of his time. What he did was considered normal at the time for a conqueror or political/religious leader. What IS does, is considered barbaric for the 21th century.
But you can't idolize Muhammed and then say IS isn't true Islam... Muhammed wasn't against (sex) slaves or beheading religious/political dissidents.
First thing Muhammed did in Yathrib (Medina) was kill the Jews.
