Do you call Grid full on sim? And NFS Shift / Shift 2, Ferrari challenge, and TD Ferrari racing legends? All semi realistic track racers from last gen.

As far as what makes it arcade, I don't know. The handling is not as realistic as GT, yet definitely a lot closer to GT than to NFS rivals. NFS Shift comes close (without the suspension bug :)

The line between sim and arcade racer is blurry. Basically if its not really aiming for realism then it often gets pegged as an arcade racer.

Personally, I feel a true arcade racer is the kind of stuff Midway and Sega generally made for arcades.

Yeah. I associate power sliding, power ups, and gimmicks with arcade racers.  Ridge racer, Sega rally revo, Wipeout, Blur, Split/second, Mario kart for example. Racers aren't very popular anymore apart from a few heavy hitters. Looking up genres on Wikipedia, racing is just mentioned as a sub genre of sports games, while shooters have 7 sub categories. There were over 90 vastly different racing games released last gen, probably over a hundred as I can think of a few more I missed while scanning through wikipedia.
