"upmarket gamers are screaming at Nintendo for ‘destroying’ gaming"
There is no such thing as "upmarket" or "downmarket" in gaming. In contrast to Honda, Microsoft or Nintendo only provide the platform. The content is delivered by software developers. (Of course there are first-party devs but this is a different matter).
So under the assumption that the Xbox motion control was competitive to the Wii one and lawful there would be two gaming platforms. The Wii and the 360 with the same capabilities and much more. And the price would be almost the same.
Adding motion controls doesn't make the 360 "downmarket". I think this is a clear example for taking an analogy where it doesn't fit.
