Reason for this is just how important these reviews have become. Studios actually get/miss bonuses if their game score below  certain review average. You have things like review embargos or lobbying for better reviews. You have situations where a good or bad review can completely influence how well or poorly a game sells. Yes, the industry needs to be taken more seriously. Funny thing is, as far as the money goes, they sue as hell are taking it seriously. Everyone knows there is a lot of money in gaming. The problem is the gross lack of standards and representation. Dare I ay the gaming indusstry is a very anti consumer industryby nature. Everything is done in secrecy, decisions are made with little regard to hat the consumer wants, there are zero standards when it comes to making reviews and companies actually have the power to "blacklist" websites if they feel they don't like the treatment they are getting from those sites.

Above all else, I feel the problem with the gaming industry is a lack of proper representation. What we need is some sort of gaming union. A consumer owned body that dictates what happen sin the industry to a great degree. Things like cross platform multiplayer across multiplayer games should be standard. Things like media playback on the consoles should be standard. There should be a way to enforce digital pricing and price drops. And there sould be an industry standard certified review system that is independent of publishers. 

The more I think o it, the more I think I should create a website geared to this exact purpose. And gather so much gamer support that it can very well dictate what happens in the industry and what doesn't.
