Pretty tough to answer. I don't think there is a single thing that would apply to all games. Wait, there is.
I'm always looking for uniqueness. Could be any aspect of the game but it should be intriguing and never been seen before. The main reason why I absolutely love games like Baten Kaitos and Resonance of Fate and Mirror's Edge and Nier. It doesn't even matter if they are actually good when they are able to bring something new and cool to the table.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
