I run SLI 770 4GB FTW Edition cards, with an eye on a pair of 970OC 4GBs on BF. But I am the guy that ends up building everyone else's PCs, and many guys have super limited budgets, so used 6850 at $40 is hard to pass up for those wanting a dirt cheap gaming box. I've helped a lot of people build capable units for $200-250 :)

R9 270's are not too hard to find at a pretty cheap price, especially used. Unless the budget is really, really limited I'd go with that and a cheapo CPU like the Athlon or Pentium. You'd get the most out of the card for the CPU power given, and the CPUs are like 60-70$, and the cards aren't impossible to find below 100$. At that point you're already past what the consoles can do on a good day.
