The way I look at it, is like looking at a football team. Sure I can look back and see how many amazing teams my favorite team had or reminice about the super bowls we won back in the day, but that was a completely different team. Has zero effect on my team now. What changed? Are the players not as good now, are other teams just that much better, does management suck, ect. Why does my team suck now. And due to them sucking for that last 5-10 years, its pretty easy to guess they will suck this year too. Who knows, maybe we'll draft some amazing player and he miraculously turns it around.
Now swapping terms for Final Fantasy. The games used to be great, but now aren't so much. We can reminice about their past games all day and how great they were, but that is not what we see today. What changed? Is it new dev's? Is it managements or publishers screwing shit up. Maybe the quailty of others games is just so much better that now Final Fantasy doesn't stand out anymore. Who knows what the exact reason is, but fact remains that Square Enix with their Final Fantasy series is now a sub par franchise and has been for many years. I'm fully expecting a sub-par FF15, based on RECENT history, not going back 15-20 years. Things where so much more different back then, you can't compare.
Thus same reason Xenoblade X is compared to Chronicles, versus any other past game that mauy have been good or bad. Because its more recent. Their recent track record is good. They went ot the superbowl last year versus 20 years ago.

Okay, though all I was saying in the post you replied to is that the logic goes both ways. If things changed so quickly for the worse after X (according to bigtakilla), then things can change for the better very quickly too. All the elements are still there for a great game, it's final fantasy after all.
If we were to compare with baking, they are still making chocolate cake. It will taste like chocolate cake, it might be better than the last good one, or it could be worse.
That's my opinion of it. History can be used both ways, in the direction of improvement and in the direction of worsening.

That would have to do with the team behind it though. The old Square team made the amazing games, so if they were still there I would be a lot less doubtful (never mind the fact that what has been shown so far leans towards what I liked the least about XIII which is customization). You should have to some degree earn trust and Team Squenix hasn't earned it yet.
This is more like once apon a time getting name brand items, now you're getting store brand that says compare to.
