Gears invented the cover based 3rd person shooter. You had plenty of third person shooters before it came out. For example, Resident evil 4.

I don't think Gears of War was even the first cover based 3rd person shooter. But it definitely made the mechanic popular though.

I don't think any game got cover down like Gears to this date.

I played Spec Ops: The Line a month ago. While it was fun, the cover mechanic was horrid and I could understand why not multiplayer.

Gears game mechanics excell on gun control and the transition from cover to moving in action.

Agreed, the foundation was made but Gears definitely perfected it and made the cover system very smooth.
