It's because they had a last minute pcb revision and had already put the cooling solution in to production and didnt want to fork out on a new run

Wouldn't doubt it although, they had the same issue with the 760 so you would think they would have fixed it for the 900 series but nope. Asus/MSI/Gigabyte all have a new design for the 900 series but not evga :/

just seems to me like they designed it to have 4 heat pipes, the unit cost was too high so they told the factor "change it to three then" and the factory, being like the chinese factories usually are (i work with these people daily), were like, okay remove one pipe, and did exactly that.
