Sounds like you did not even play the game so you do not know the hypothetical story we are referring to.  The surgeon was part of a militia group and they did not have children with them. They try to kill you for no reason other than you are no longer useful to them.

Yes exactly. They're hell bent on killing both joel and ellie, for the good of mankind. If the approach was different, then maybe the outcome would be different too. Either way, joel's action would most likely be the same, any one who's a threat to ellie will be killed.
