I traded a Vectrex to get my Dreamcast. I happened across a Gamecube.
The DC was a system I just wanted to have. Lots of great games. I only tried the online after Sega shut things down but was still able to find some Unreal action. And it was less laggy than some of my recent SSBB matches. It had the first graphics that made me go "Wow" with gameplay to back it up.
It also was undersupported by third parties. Many of its better games found homes on other consoles after its demise. The games did not progress as much as on other consoles as far as visual quality (Soul Calibur was a launch title and still holds up). Wireless controllers are almost impossible to find (and yes they do exist, I have a pair). The memory cards ate batteries.
I have roughly 150 games for the system, including homebrews. (The DC also is a pirate's dream -- part of the reason for its demise).
Meanwhile, I just wanted a few games for my Gamecube. I slowly picked up this and that. And realized just how good it was. I also got the Wavebird controllers and cleared out the cords.
I have roughly 75 games for the system.
I stilled play my GC -- it was in place until I got my Wii. My DC is put away.
The DC is like a fling. The GC is like a spouse.
