There is a third option don't use ESRAM.

Not giving the credits to Sony but if what they showed are true they tested many EDRAM configs for PS4 (even 1GB/s) and the results are not good enought... so why MS didn't faced it in project time? What they are expecting?

ESRAM is much more energy efficient and gives more flexbility in optimisation when you are dealing with a SOC configuration.

Basically all smartphones and tablets are using one kind of embeded RAM.

GPU cards are strugling to get over the diminishing returns of adding a lot of VRAM and keep throughtput up . They are wasting tons of energy moving dada back and forth main RAM, VRAM and GPU/CPU. Low level APIs can help now on PC but problem remains.

For the XOne a bigger ESRAM meant a bigger GPU otherwise all the extra room would be waste, and also a bigger CPU as most of the bus would be idle most of the time.

This is all the balance stuff that Penallo was talking last year.

Developers never demand for Microsoft they remove the ESRAM o even a much more powerfull GPU. They were mostly happy with the 8GB of RAM and 8 core CPU.
