Hardly overlooked. It's one of the greatest games ever made, and was almost universally agreed to be by critics. 97 on metacritic and sold 11 million.
You really can't call 11 million overlooked. That's more than Final Fantasy 7 or Ocarina of Time. The only part that requires explanation is why New Super Mario Bros sold so much more, given that it's an inferior game in every possible way.
