| kupomogli said: I'm interested in it as it looks like a good game, but it's also a cheap retro indie game, so regardless of it's quality it would have scored higher on that alone. Maybe not as high as it scored right now. Sitting at a 92 on the 3DS, 88 on the Wii U, and 85 on PC. It's also only on Nintendo and PC right now, so the more hardcore Nintendo fanbase is obviously going to hype it far more because of that. It's the exact same reason Rayman Legends sold best on the Wii U, because it was originally labeled as a Nintendo exclusive so a lot of those people were already interested. That's the thing though, the hardcore Nintendo fanbase. Just because it's getting a lot of attention by those Nintendo fans that know more about the industry doesn't mean it's going to sell well. Shovel Knight surpassed expectations with their 15,000 Kickstarter donations and 75,000 first week sales. I'm sure you're aware of how significant of a drop sales become after the first week. That 90,000 isn't even Nintendo customers, that's PC owners as well. With the first week breakdown, 60% of sales were across 3DS and Wii U, while the other 40% were on PC. So 54,000 Nintendo sales. Considering that Shovel Knight will probably not hit even a quarter of a million lifetime sales on all Nintendo products combined. I repeat. "Most Nintendo fans don't even blink at anything third party on Nintendo consoles. Mystery Solved." |
Your casual dismissal of Shovel Knight's success and popularity is upsetting to me. Colin Moriarty -- yes, that Colin Moriarty -- reviewed the game for IGN, and has been calling it his GOTY so far ever since. Hardcore Nintendo fans my ass, you should play the game.
Now you are saying Nintendo fans are especially vocal in support of the game because of its high Metascore. That is correct. Nintendo fans like good games, and they like to see good games on their systems, as shown by the success of other well-received eShop titles such as SteamWorld Dig, Mutant Mudds, Shin'en games, and so on. Nintendo fans will also call out shit when they see it, they are not blindly praising every eShop game they can find.
Finally, and most laughably, your sales figures are very old. Those 54,000 sales represent only the first week of sales for Shovel Knight. By the end of the first month, the game had actually sold about 108,000 copies on Nintendo platforms, and I should remind you that to date Shovel Knight has only been released in North America. First month sales also show stronger legs on Nintendo platforms than on Steam, a trend that is not uncommon for eShop titles.
Considering that 60% of Shovel Knight's sales were on Nintendo platforms after one month, and that that percentage has most likely risen since then, if Nintendo fans don't even blink at third party games, what does that say about Steam users?
