From what I know everybody on consortium can use Blu-ray in their productcs without any costs... everybody else needs to pay... even if I'm wrong the fact that MS pays more royalties than Sony holds true.
From teardown MS uses this memory in the first batch of Xbones:
16x SK Hynix H5TQ4G63AFR 4 Gb (512 MB) DDR3 SDRAM (total of 16 x 512 MB = 8 GB)
It is not avaiable to retail market... so it is hard to compare... and there is a addiction memory in the board too:
SK Hynix H26M42003GMR 8 GB eMMC NAND Flash
I don't know if they are adding that in the costs.
About the use of more density memory and cheaper I don't think it will be possible without change all the PCB because right now they have a 256bits buss splited in 16 parts of 16bits... so they needs 16 modules of RAM... with 8 modules they will use only 128bits of the bus... unless they change to 32bits per module that is a big change.
That is why Sony change from 4GB to 8GB was so easy... they have the same 256bits splited in 16bits per module... so they are using 2Gbits modules in each in total of 4GB... they just changed the memory module from 2Gbits to 4Gbits without need to change anything in the PCB... more density, cheaper and reached 8GB.
For example:
8GB (16x 512) to 16GB (16x1GB) is more easy to MS than change the PCB from 16bits per module to 32bits per module.
