That's inexcusable. The original concept was shown almost a decade ago. I guess a lot of staff were pulled to revive FFIV. I think they rebuilt the title in the Xenoblade mold after the poor reception FFXIII received. Hopefully we'll see the game in 2016, but 2015 looks like it's out.

In what universe do people believe this actually happened?

Maybe because the new trailer looks like they're driving through Gaur Plains from Xenoblade? And because the combat system looks to have similarities to Xenoblade and FF12. And because Xenoblade was the biggest JRPG success story of the 7th gen and came right when the genre looked on the verge of collpase. And because the game out Final Fantasy'd any FF game of last generation and felt like what FF13 should have been. And because Square desperately needs the series to get back on track after spending the last decade trying to remove JRPG elements from FF. And following a blueprint of the game that saved JRPG's last gen is probably a safe way to start back on the right track. And because this game has shifted gears so many times in the last decade of development, it wouldn't be surprising if they completely did a 180 with it a year or two back. Do I need to keep going?

If you have been following the project news you would know that the concepts like huge areas to explore, car even airplane were planned since the beginning. The world in XV is familiar for anyone who played FF games, the most recent example is Gran Pulse in XIII. The battle system looks very different. Xenoblade, like XII before it, use elements that usually found in MMOs. It is heavily based on menus. XV goes beyond that, it is more focused on real-time movement, using the environment and weather to your advantage and controlling the rest of the party through commands. Also no need to mention switching between different weapons on the fly ( hopefully it will be done right).

I hope you realize that even a relatively small Jrpg as Tales of Xillia sold more than Xenoblade. "The biggest success story" for companies is measured by sales, I assure you. Xenoblade is your personal "biggest success". Value is in the eye of the beholder, indeed.

So yes, keep going..

Impact isn't measured in just sales. You can find countless articles and editorials written about how Xenoblade saved JRPG's last gen which were stagnant, and dying out to western RPG hybrids prior to Xenoblade's impact. Since then JRPG's have come back in style in a big way and Square Enix decided to focus on traditional JRPG's again and not western oriented ones (Bravely Default for example). It's not like it's just my opinion or something.
