It's the responsible thing to do as a division of a larger company that does have to justify its continued existence when underperforming expectations.
I don't think everyone looking at the company responses (reactions) through anything other than eyes of brand loyal consumers would be fooled into thinking they're nothing more than an attempt to give undecided consumers what they are asking for with the intent of gaining their business.
So while it's not out of altruism, MS is still be to noted for responding to consumer demand rather than ignoring it under the assumption that they know what's best and that the original business model and development plan for the product should not be changed.
