you get a new attribute to your clothing called light it works by giving light points to your rare and legendary  gear find better gear with better light pts  and each new improved helmet , boots etc adds to your light tally till you go up a level it doesn't stay though  equip a lesser item and you can go down a level  , it comes down to doing strikes etc and getting better gear.  ps you can buy gear from the head of your guardian type .
