Former Auschwitz guard, 93, charged with accessory to 300,000 murders in Germany

Ok so Im going to sound like an idiot here BUT how was what he did against the law?? I mean if the Nazi's ran Germany surely they would have made all this ok right?? And if he commited a crime whilst the law wasnt in place then he shouldnt be held reponsible now.
