I think the base of it is; some always wanted independence, SNP always gets a lot of votes. However, introduction of their own parliament, followed by financial crisis (notice how more nations have popular nationalist parties at the moment), SNP gained power in local parliament and got majority so passed their bill for referendum. Westminster said 'Okay' for them to have it.
