Have hardly played my games online, and I would probably be content with just silver, but decided 4 bucks a month isn't much. And it's sweet to have the option of online multiplayer when I want it. As for Live, the interface is simple and easy... exactly what it should be. I'd perhaps pay for silver, if it were required (hope MS isn't reading this 
).
