They knew wtf was going on. Hitler pretty much expressed his hatred for jewish people BEFORE he was Furer.

You're seeing the world as too black or white. I'm pretty sure conscription was mandatory during the Nazi regime. I'd like to think that I would have been a hero too if I was German during those times but, realistically, I'd keep my head down and think of living and the lives of my family members.
