Why is the American government/ Empire so keen on war all the time?

The world is too interconnected now to just write off one region, let it completely go to shit and say "it's okay, it doesn't effect us at home." It will, it will just take time to come home to roost.

Now, this doesn't mean you can just go in, guns a blazing, kill stuff and think that will solve the problem either, but action is needed. Thoughtful action.

However, 9/11 only happened because of American intervention in the first place. If there was no intervention the U.S would not be a target, or at least not as big of a target as it is now. Preventative warfare is only necessary for states that get into everybody's business in the first place. 

You can be intervention-happy without pissing people off (or at least pissing as many people off). Even setting aside the matter of Israel, folks like Osama were and are mad at us for helping to prop up the corrupt monarchies (granted, if the choice is corrupt monarchy and radical jihadist state, the former is the lesser evil, but we can tolerate moderate Islamist states like Morsi's Egypt or the present Tunisia).

It more speaks to the long-term failures of Kissinger-style realpolitik. Populist anger in affected countries simmer, and your name becomes mud, making it much harder to exercise soft-power leverage over them in the future.
