I was fortunate enough to fulfill all the required conditions to receive an early demo code so I've been getting familiar with this new Smash for the last few hours. Here's my quick impressions:

First of all, getting used to the controls is a challenge, my hands are so used to the Gamecube controller that I sometimes press the wrong button. Also the lack of C-stick does make a difference but I think it'll be a good experience to force myself not to depend on it for quick smashes and air attacks.

The game itself is really fun, faster than Brawl for sure but slower than Melee, which fits just right with my tastes. The screen size is fine (I have a 3DSXL), it did get a bit small when the Andross assist trophy popped up and the camera pulled back but nothing dramatic.

As for the characters, I'm enjoying the 5 available. Mega Man takes some getting used to because his options are limited at close range but he's by no means a bad character (his U-tilt has crazy knockback). Villager is a nice quirky character, I'm still not sure how useful his Down-B can be but I guess it'll come with practice.

The veterans play pretty similar to their Brawl version, Pikachu's Thunder (Down-B) is the biggest change I've noticed. Also, I'm actually not half bad with Mario which is strange because I never really got the hang of him in Brawl (still suck at his recovery though).
