GTAV was hyped to what I would call "insurmountable" levels. And guess what? It still got praised as one of the best games of all time. I don't buy that people's expectations for it were just impossible to meet. There's been games with even bigger hype before that have not only lived up to it, but even surpassed the hype (again GTAV). If it were a truly great game people and critics would be more than happy with it. The fact is though it's merely very average and is not all that was promised.
