The same thing every year, and people keep supporting this.

Yep it is the exact same. Same setting, same characters, same story, same gameplay mechanics, same game name, same box art.

Oh wait, actually that is all different! :O

Well.  The gameplay is the same.  I think that's all that matters because the storylines aren't that entertaining imo.

Also, are there any games without the present day/past day crap yet?  Something that's only the assassin and not some lame character in the future.

Not yet unfortunately, although I am a big AC fan I still think the writing is a bit weak, however in the historical sequences the lead can carry the narritive in a passable manner, especially in the case of Ezio Auditore and Edward Kenway, not so much in the case of Connor. The modern day sequences however are abysmal, although there is some potential, its treated a bit too much like a sideshow.

But the historical open world makes it up for me however. Its moments like when you climb up on the cross on the church of the holy sepulchre and look upon jerusalem or when you gaze upon Hagia Sophia from atop of one its minarets you realise that there is no other series like it.

Doesn't have to be open world to give you that feeling.  Many times in Lords of Shadow were you traversing through an area and after reaching the top, the game panned out and showed you just how far you've went, as does Uncharted.  These are also games you have a bit more control rather than just holding R1 and up.

Also, the whole of Shadow of  the Colossus is beautiful.  Most of the world is vast open space but outside of the areas you fight the colossi there are a lot of unique developed areas, and then there are the areas you traverse through and fight the 16 colossi in which are beautifully crafted areas like no other part within the game world.

The Saboteur is another one.  the climbing is similar to Uncharted but slower paced, but also similar to Assassin's Creed where you can climb any surface that has a hand hold, although with reasonable distance from the character while climbing.  However again, you have complete control over what you do.  Without taking the easy way up, using the elevators, you can actually climb the Eiffel Tower.  You can get on the roof of almost every building in that game.  Great game except for the music.  It's  based off 1900s Paris, but they didn't have to base the music from that time as well.

There's Just Cause, Elder Scrolls, almost any other GTA clone than what I've so far mentioned(The Saboteur.)  So Assassin's Creed isn't the "only series."

I actually meant it more from a historical standpoint than from a gaming one, as the periods and locales covered by the series have not been heavily popularized in western media or have been done so well.

But I do get your point, however in my opinion in games like Uncharted, which has its share of jaw dropping moments, are direction heavy and you tend view such moments from the developers perspective.

However SotC is a great example and I completely agree, everything about the world is fantastic and I have never been so immersed or affected by any game as much as that one. I remember if you would just leave it at the title screen there would be a sequence where the horse Agro would roam freely throughout the world, it was beautiful. I know Last Guardian has become a running joke here, but we as gamers have missed out on something that could have been remarkable.

I have not played saboteur, but I'll try it out
