If the NEW3DS is powerful enough to be able to handle a Wii conversion of Xenoblade it could handle other conversions too. It all depends on how much the conversion costs.
Why are Nintendo converting Xenoblade? The Wii version only sold 160k in Japan (82k first week) so it is not a big seller nor has it long legs.

Operation rainfal made that, Pandoras Tower, and The Last Story extremly popular games in the west amongst diehard Nintendo fans. I myself bought The last Story a couple years back (due to my backlog I didn't play much of it but the small amount I did play was impressive).

Sometimes things that don't release popularly become cult classics and make a bunch of money down the road. This is one of those moments.

For the west I can understand it, but so far the N3DS is exclusive to Japan. Is the Japanese interest in this game big enough for pushing handhelds to the big crowds?

Most of the Wii best sellers have already a 3DS version (NSMB, MK, SSB, Mario Party, Animal Crossing).

For the games that has not recieved a 3DS version: Mario Galaxy had six times more sales in Japan than Xenoblade, LoZ:TP quadruple, Kirbys Epic Yarn triple and LoZ:SS double. Any of these games would appeal to the Japanese audience more than Xenoblade.
