I think it was the way in which Nintendo implemented and marketed the Wii that helped it become a success (eg. Wiisports). It is also quite possible that there was still too much of a "young males only" stigma attached to gaming when the Gamecube hit six or seven years back.
Perhaps it would have been more successful with motion control, perhaps not. But I certainly think there is more to it then just tacking on motion controls at any point in history and sitting back and watching the cash roll in.
