I dont think its fixed but certainly the horror stories seem to have died off somewhat sharply.
I can only talk from my own experience. I bought in the UK in August and the GAME shop assistant kindly made sure I got one with the HDMI port.
The console has been running fine with no issues. I think it has the new drive but more importantly it never seems to get hot at all. I presume I have either been
1. Very Lucky
2. Lucky so far
3. Sold a console that will not exhibit the problem
Either way I'm very happy with the console at the mo and If it red rings it goes back.
For me as a busy professional with two other consoles Wii/PS2 this is not really an issue just a slight ball ache.
