Mk on GC sold just under 7 million, it sold 34 million on Wii. That's almost a 5x increase, more or less in line with the hardware increase, in fact it is almost exactly in line with the hardware increase. So if there was ever a games that would draw Wii owners into the new generation it's MK. SSB on GC sold just over 7 million, on Wii it sold about 12.5 million. That's a 1.8x increase, no where near the hardware increase. This means SSB has very limited appeal outside the core nintendo fanbase who are already committed to Wii U just as they were already committed to GC. The fact of the matter is the SSB system selling effect it pretty much already factored in to the calculation that Wii U is headed for a sub-30 million generation. People are using hardcore and casual wrongly here. MK is a core game that appealed to the large casual fanbase on Wii. SSB is no more core than MK but it has much less appeal to the casual audience. SSB is a major title for this year and it will help give Wii U a good level of holiday sales. But it's not Wii U's secret sauce. |
I think it will boost Wii U sales in its first month on the market, a lot of people are waiting for smash to buy a Wii U, but after that it won't raise sales at all really. It will be hard to prove either way if it launches in November or December.
