In this same breath, I applaud a journalist who gives a thorough preview, be it negative or positive, as some give previews just for "the bait". This stuff works both ways.

Well the problem is, that as soon as you give a negative preview/review, especially on an exclusive, it is simply dismissed as "the bait".

Not always - at least from most rational people. Problem with a lot of previews these days - they don't go in-depth about either what's right or wrong (unlike the magazine days of the 80s and 90s, where journalists would really cover the bases). That's my biggest complaint, as a gamer from those times. Today, it's all about hits (give a game 10/10 - don't elaborate on its merits, while giving acclaimed titles 3/10 without going much into what went wrong or simply "not liking it").

So I get the complaints and fears of shoddy journalism. This particular read, he doesn't really go in-depth and even says he wants the game to play like other games. This is partially why devs don't take many risks anymore. That's not good.

I too miss the days of magazine reviews, where site traffic didn't affect profit margins. Just confuses and messes up the whole system, which is F****d beyond all belief to me. Thats why I like to see negative previews, as they buck the predictable norm these days.

There are enough negative review for every title out there if you look hard enough. the problem is some of the reviewers give these negative reviews just to be "different". This is a clear example. He doesnt like the game because it "doesnt play like gears of war"?

really?

then IGN wonder why people cant take them seriously...
