Not making first place would be a minor setback for Sony this generation. If they don't make third by the end of the generation Sony has a significant issue.

Nobody expected Microsoft or Nintendo to beat Sony this generation. The fact that Sony's console has now been out a full year, has been reduced $200 (and probably another $100 this year), has had 4 SKUs, got a massive boost through the blu-ray win, and using the largest franchise sequels from gaming history for its 2008 lineup should put Sony at the forefront by the end of the year.

If Sony is not out of third place for living room consoles by the end of this year then it is not so much that they have lost as it is the both Nintendo and Microsoft are both winner. Especially since Microsoft also has a huge reliability issue and Nintendo wasn't supposed to be in the game to begin with...

Sony thus far, this year has been able to create the "perfect storm" for themselves. Nothing has gone wrong, everything has gone right, and they only this week started significantly pulling away from 360. They still have a lot of work to get to Wii territory.

If nothing else the console world will continue to be interesting going into next year. and if it is, that can only mean another great year of games in '09 for us the gamers.
